The sun shone brightly as the water glistened and a light breeze blew- the boats bobbled up and down gently.
Jane laughed aloud as Harry shared a joke, their mouth stuffed with sandwiches. This was a yearly ritual which they both looked forward to. Harry worked far far away in the rig and seldom visited. But he made it a point to be there every summer and Jane and he would pack a picnic basket and sneak out on the boat. They spent hours catching up on the months gone by, the little surprises and disappointments they had gone through, their hopes and dreams. It never felt like they had lived apart, they would effortlessly catch up from their last conversation which had been months ago.
Time flew but the ritual continued.
Today they were on the boat with their picnic hamper, the same wonderful weather but there was someone new. As Jane rested her head on James shoulder and gave him a peck on the cheek, a tear trickled down Harry’s eyes. He must not let her see. He wiped it off quickly and smiled.
“Take good care of my best friend and love of my life” he patted James on the back. “You are a lucky man.”
Jane looked at him and ran into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably.
“You will always remain my best friend, I love you Dad.”
Nice tail and a good twist in the end.
