Alice stood on the porch, sipping her coffee as she looked at the mist shrouding the garden, making it look picture perfect.
It was her birthday today and she had broken the tradition of 20 years. Every year John and she came here, cut the cake, drank wine, dined and made love but today she was here alone. She had lied to him about work, it was easy.
She heard the car sound as Josh got out and walked towards her, a bottle of champagne and 2 glasses in his hand.
“So ready to take the plunge, I am with you, don’t worry about John, he will come around”
She nodded in agreement as she recalled her heated conversation with John a year ago. “Are you crazy to leave a well paid, secure job and think of starting your own firm? No I am not in favour, don’t make this mistake” he had bellowed.
He was the one who made the decisions each time, when would they tie the knot, where would she work, who would they meet, which school the kids go to?
But now no more. She opened her laptop and hit the “send” button
Her resignation letter and a copy to John were sent out.
She smiled at Josh as he raised a toast “Welcome partner, here ‘s to our new firm”
This birthday was going to be truly special.

the most important decisions are often difficult and are met with antagonism. you’ve portrayed it so well in the story. totally loved it.

Ah, clever writing. I thought this was the story of an affair but turned out to be a business affair. Nicely done.

My first thought was Alice was having an affair .She need not follow the set tradition every year and glad that she executed her plan. Hope she succeeds in her venture. A simple story with a strong message.

I’m happy she decided to break from being the follower to being the decision maker. I hope she and Josh see a lot of success in their new venture.
