The white toilet seat gleamed in the sunlight. The makeshift door was open, I looked at it and felt a sense of pride in what I had accomplished.

The 21st century and people stiff defecated in the open. A toilet was unheard off. When I first told them about this, they were aghast. How can we dirty the house?Its a sin.

The women suffered the most, hiding in the bushes, looking around fearfully to make sure no ones watching.

Now, no one had to hesitate, they could answer nature’s call peacefully with privacy.

This post is inspired by a film was released in support of governmental campaigns to improve the sanitation conditions, with an emphasis on the eradication of open defecation, especially in rural areas. In India its still a menace in some villages which the Government is working on to fix.

  8. I loved the movie though I must admit that though I’ve never used the open air to pee , there are times when the clean grass is preferable to a smelly loo….. especially when there is tonnes of gunk already , flies and a yucky wet floor .

  13. I thought you had the wrong century for this story when I read “21st century”. At first, I though the century should be 18th century” or so. . . . Until I read your information piece about rural areas in India. Then I though how fortunate we truly are compared to many others. Your story highlights that the world has many less fortunate areas.
