Lonely at the Top #FlashFiction

The first time I saw Mysha was at the coffee vending machine. A 22 year old fresh grad, in a crisp white shirt and black trousers, as she fumbled to use the machine. Before she could react, the cup was overfull with mocha and a lot had spilled out. She looked flummoxed.

Today after 12 years I see her as the same Mysha who has moved up the realms of the corporate ladder, through her sheer grit and determination. As the youngest Executive Director, as she walks to the coffee machine and fills in her cup with 2 shots of expresso, you can’t help but give her a second glance. But I don’t see the same girl with twinkling eyes and a smile. Has that faded somewhere amidst the glamor and chutzpah of the corporate world or does she hide it deliberately lest people take advantage of her?

They say it gets really lonely at the top, especially for a woman. Mysha’s eyes tell me its a bitter truth.
